In 1867 The Highland Park Building Company purchased an area of desolate land just south of the Port Clinton, which had been the main source of supplies prior to the founding of the Northwestern Railway in 1855. Incorporated in 1869, Highland Park was the third North Shore suburb incorporated, following Evanston and Lake Forest.
